No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
