Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
