British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
